The screen is an entry point for the voter whose identity details match the record, not a way to browse all Imperial voters by surname.
Imperial Lookup Is a Self-Check
A common myth is that an online registration checker makes the underlying voter list open to everyone. California says otherwise. The voter status tool lets a person confirm their own details, while voter registration information is not public data in the ordinary sense. A casual user cannot enter another person's name and browse a full local roll. Broader access runs through a separate application and is limited to purposes recognized by state law.
The split protects personal data while still serving voters. Someone who cannot get a match can use the Imperial County phone channel instead of guessing at new form fields. Imperial Voter Records Field Inventory

Participation is easy to misread. It can show that a ballot or voting method was recorded for an election, but the secret ballot remains secret. No voter-file field reveals which candidate or measure a person selected.
Confidential Imperial Voter Records
California's access limits come from Elections Code sections 2188 and 2194, Government Code section 7924.000, and California Code of Regulations sections 19001 through 19013. The state's notices also exclude driver's-license data, Social Security numbers, and signatures from voter-file release. Confidential voters are withheld from ordinary distribution, so an authorized file still is not a complete public roster.
California also operates the Safe at Home address-confidentiality program for qualifying protected people. Separate rules apply to confidential elected officials and candidates. Elections Code section 2166.9 permits access to their confidential contact data only for a bona fide journalistic or governmental purpose as the Secretary of State determines.
Confidential by California law. Signatures, Social Security numbers, driver's-license data, and protected-voter records are not released through an ordinary voter-file request.
Imperial Registrar Voter Help
The Imperial County Registrar of Voters is the local fallback for status verification, sample-ballot questions, vote-by-mail help, and election information. Its office is at 940 W. Imperial is not the county seat, so this El Centro office holds the county election function even when the voter lives in the City of Imperial.

Imperial Voter Registration Updates
VoteCal is California's centralized voter database. It lets election officials coordinate records across counties and supports list maintenance. From a voter's point of view, the clearest update triggers are a move, a legal name change, or a change in political party. Imperial County says those changes require re-registration, generally by the 15-day deadline before an election.
Records can also move to inactive or cancelled status through address changes, voter action, death information, felony-imprisonment rules, and other state or federal maintenance processes. Status labels should not be treated as a judgment about a person's intent. They describe how election officials currently classify the record. A voter who sees an unexpected status should contact the county office and use the official process to correct it.
Note: Imperial County's Voter's Choice Act model also gives voters mail, drop-box, and vote-center options, which are separate from registration status.
Imperial Records in Statewide File
The statewide file is obtained by application, not by running a public name search. California permits access, with exceptions, for candidates, certain ballot-measure committees, and people seeking information for election, scholarly, journalistic, political, or approved governmental purposes. A requester may seek statewide, county, district, or specific-person data. Up to ten specific voter records may be listed on one application.

- Choose the lawful qualification and exact purpose. Statewide, county, district, specific-voter, participation-history, and district-data options must match the intended work.
- Complete the contact, beneficiary, security, and intended-use sections. Attach a clear current government photo ID and sign with an original wet signature.
- Mail or hand-deliver the form. Fax and email are not accepted. Review normally takes 7 to 14 business days in the order received.
- Pay the applicable charge. The schedule is $15 per thousand records, with a $15 minimum and $100 cap; a specific record costs $30, also capped at $100 per application.
- Receive and secure the approved data. The bulk set may arrive as three tab-delimited files on encrypted DVD; specific records may arrive through an encrypted WinZip email attachment.
A county source agency may set its own fee. Applicants should confirm the current amount and delivery route before sending payment. General California public-record rules are treated separately in the Imperial public records access details; they do not turn the protected voter file into open data.
Imperial Voter File Misuse Limits
Approval follows the stated purpose. The application bars using the data for an unapproved purpose, commercial advertising or marketing, or harassment of a voter or household. It also bars an unauthorized transfer, public exposure of the data, and certain text-message advertising without an opt-out. California regulations say voter information must not be sent outside the United States.
Security is part of the request, not an afterthought. The applicant must explain how the file will be kept confidential and acknowledge breach duties. Sharing with another party generally requires a new application and express written approval, apart from the limited vendor arrangement addressed by the form. A source agency may reject a request it reasonably believes is illegal, fraudulent, harassing, made in bad faith, or otherwise impermissible.
Elections Code section 18109 makes unlawful use a misdemeanor and allows substantial fines. The lawful course is simple: use only approved fields, only for the approved purpose, and keep every copy secure.
Historical Imperial Voter Registers
Old poll books and registration registers can help with family history, but no verified Imperial County year range surfaced in the official sources. That gap should shape the search. Start by asking the Registrar whether it retains the period sought. Then check the California State Archives, the California State Library's Imperial County research material, local libraries, and the Pioneers' Museum collections.
Imperial County was organized in the early twentieth century, with many county record series beginning around 1907. That date is context, not proof that voter rolls survive from the same year. Researchers should request a catalog description before assuming a poll book exists, note the precinct and election date if known, and distinguish an original register from a later index.
